About St. Clair Flats State Wildlife Area

St. Clair Flats State Wildlife Area spans approximately 3,100 acres of marshes, small islands, and shallow water habitats along the delta of the St. Clair River where it flows into Lake St. Clair. This area represents one of the largest undeveloped freshwater delta ecosystems in the Great Lakes region. The landscape is dominated by cattail marshes, open water, and patches of emergent vegetation that support a wide range of fish, amphibians, and migratory birds. It serves as a critical breeding ground and stopover for waterfowl and shorebirds, including species such as mallards, Canada geese, and great blue herons. Historically the site was influenced by logging and early industry, but restoration efforts have enhanced its ecological integrity. Popular recreational activities include boating, fishing, waterfowl hunting, wildlife observation, and seasonal birdwatching due to the area's rich bird diversity. Although there are no developed hiking trails, the water channels and shoreline provide excellent paddling experiences. Access is primarily by boat, making the area special for visitors seeking a more remote natural experience close to the Detroit metropolitan area. The wildlife area is also a focus for conservation, protecting critical wetlands that improve water quality and provide flood control functions. Visitors are drawn to the peaceful natural setting and the abundant opportunities to see waterfowl and other wetland wildlife in a largely protected habitat.
